Before buying this app for $29.99, I owned the Golf Logix GPS, which I bought for around $200. It sucked because I had to load the courses on the GPS every time I wanted to play at a different course. It could only hold 20 courses, and I had to pay a yearly subscription fee of $50. Not to mention that I had to change the battery every 2 rounds. It was very very annoying to say the least.

With the Golfshot GPS app, 16,000+ golf courses can be downloaded in an instant over your iphone’s wireless carrier. Not only does the app give you front, back, middle of the green yardages, but it also gives you the distance to a hazard, or a bunker or how many yards til the end of the fairway. It also gives you an aerial view with a simple click. I also love the score tracking feature. I barely even use score cards anymore because the score keeper actually upload all of your rounds to their site, golfshot.com.

Golfshot GPS for the iPhone is hands down the best iPhone app out there. At $29.99 and no subscription fees, you really can’t go wrong. I have used this app for over 200 rounds already, and it gets better with every update. One charge of the iPhone battery will last you an entire round with some spare battery left, and that’s with leaving the GPS on the entire time.

Basically, the Golfshot app will record erroneous scores/penalties/putts, etc.  It’s kind of annoying because I have to make sure I have the correct numbers at the end of the round.  It usually happens when I go back in to edit a previous score, but this isn’t always the case.  Sometimes, I will enter a score for one of my opponents and instead of the default par, it will select bogey or something like that, then I’ll have to go back in to change the score, and when I go back in, the stats are totally different than what they were set to.

Also, last week, my iphone 4 would boot up properly (I’m guessing due to the beta nature of iOS5), so I had to restore my iphone from a backup.  Well, even though Golfshot keeps all of my rounds online when it does a sync, after I restored my iphone, Golfshot did not upload the rounds back onto my iPhone.  I was missing about 2 weeks worth of rounds, which I still have records of through their website.  Their “sync” is one way.  I think it needs to be made two way somehow.

The first great thing about the Golfshot app is that it’s got pretty much every course in the world mapped out.  Let’s just say that I haven’t come across a course that wasn’t in Golfshot.  Over 35,000 mapped golf courses all around the world!  Courses are synced across the internet, so no linking up to your laptop; no storing only 20 courses like some GPS devices; no annual fees!

Secondly, I used to keep my scores on Fairwayfiles.com by manually entering my hole-by-hole scores from the scorecard after each and every round.  Now, I store all of my scores on Golfshot, and it keeps great stats, and my USGA handicap.  No more broken pencils, no more scorecards, no more confusion.  It’s amazing.

Third, the battery on the Golflogix handheld GPS lasted at most 2.5 rounds.  I would store AA batteries in my bag as a backup, but sometimes I would forget or my backup batteries would be dead, so no GPS.  With the iPhone app, I charge my phone every day anyways, so I never had to worry about the gps not working.  On the iPhone 3G, the gps wasn’t as fast and battery does not last as long, but it was still good enough to get through an entire round.  On the iPhone 4, I still have a good 20-50% battery left after each round.  Not to mention that I can check my email on the course, and do whatever else I need to do along with the golf gps.  The gps updates very fast on the iphone 4 too.

Fourth, the stats on this thing is great.  All of my rounds are saved online on their website golfshot.com.  Not only can I see all of my rounds through the iphone app, but I can also go to the website and review them all.  The stats have pie charts, and graphs, and percentages…pretty much everything you need to know where the problems lie.

There are so many features in this app.  How about the Aerial view?

Absolutely silly.  You can even move the cursor to get exact yardages based on where the pin is on the green.  Or if you want to carry the bunker or hazard.  This app is amazing.

Overall, I can’t see to say enough about this app.  I think the one thing that they can improve is the betting tracking.  They have a few options for match play at the moment, but I can’t seem to get it to work very well.  It’d be nice to know where I stand in the match against my opponent in an instant.  Regardless, this app was well worth the money for $29.99.
